Many people find it hard to t*ar themselves away from Football Manager, a football management sim*lation series that sees the player take on a team and guide them to victory – well, that’s the hope, at least.
But one man took his obse*sion to the next level when he rocked up at his own wedding with a laptop, and started playing a game while his new wife sat beside him.
Burak, from Turkey, had always planned to bring the laptop so that he could play a ‘special video’ for his bride. But when technical problems led to a delay in the proceedings, the 28-year-old saw his opportunity to continue his fairytale journey with Trabzonspor, a team he has led to six consecutive Süper Lig titles.
Explaining that a viral photo of him playing as his wife sat on the sidelines was ‘not planned’, Burak told SPORTbible: “Basically I brought my computer with me to the wedding as I prepared a special video about the story of our relationship, but the size of the video was huge.
“And because I couldn’t decide how to transfer that clip to our wedding organizer, I thought the best solution was to bring the computer and they would eventually find the best way to transfer it.” While weddings are supposed to run smoothly without a h!ccup, rarely is that the case – as Burak and his bride learned when a few technical difficulties saw them sitting around waiting for a while.
Burak said: “A person from the organization told us, ‘Only another 30 minutes!'”So after that announcement, I reached out for my laptop and ‘jokingly’ started up Football Manager.”I mean, my wife could da*age my computer if I wasn’t joking around… “I played one cup game, one league game and then shut down my computer.”
Burak has been a fan of the game series ever since his cousin bought him Championship Manager 3, thinking it was similar to FIFA 99. After installing it, Burak was d!sappointed to see that the game was ‘meaningless’ as he didn’t know any English and there wasn’t actually any football involved. But he persevered, adding: “A couple of months later I bought an ‘English to Turkish dictionary’ and the first thing I was looking for was the meaning of ‘continue’ – and here we are!”Burak said he’s not really sure if his wife enjoys his obse*sion, but cla!ms she allows him to play Football Manager under one condition. “It’s hard to say whether she likes it [Football Manager] or not,” he said. “Luckily, I have a wife who allows me to have some hobbies, as long as I can sp*re enough time for her. “It would be very difficult otherwise because when I’m in the mood, I’ll played 3-4 hours on a week day and 6-7 hours on a weekend.”
