Lauryn Hill, The First Women Rapper In History To Sell Album 10 Million Copies Of The Miseducation

Roommates, as we continue to celebrate all forms of Bla-ck excellence for #Bla-ckHistoryMonth, the legendary Lauryn Hill just made some amazing history of her own. It was just announced that Lauryn Hill is now the first female rapper in history to ever have an album sell 10 million copies, courtesy of her iconic, Grammy award-winning album “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.”

There is a very small group of hip hop artists who have a 10 million-selling album…and Lauryn Hill is officially the first woman to join them. Almost 23 years after it was released to endless criti-cal accla*m and countl-ess awards, Lauryn Hill’s 1998 album “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” has joined the diamond album club.

Complex reports, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently confirmed the news that Lauryn’s debut album has now sold more than 10,000,000 units since its release.

The musical milestone is even more significant, as music streaming has caus*d pure album sales to plummet. However, Lauryn now joins the likes of other classic hip hop albums, including 2Pac’s “All Eyez On Me” and Outkast’s “Speakerboxx/The Love Below.”

Speaking about the album in a previous interview, she explained the process in creating it:

“I think my intention was simply to make something that made my foremothers and forefathers in music and social and political str*ggle know that someone received what they’d sacrific-ed to give us, and to let my peers know that we could walk in that truth, proudly and confidently.

At that time, I felt like it was a duty or responsibility to do so. … I challenged the norm and introduced a new standard.

I believe “The Miseducation” did that and I believe I still do this—defy convention when the convention is questionable.”

“The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” was also ranked as the highest female hip hop album of all-time by “Rolling Stone” on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums.”
